What is 3D mural Art?
Mural art traditional involved painting on walls. So, the 16 th century fresco painting in the Sistine Chapel in Italy by Michelangelo is a classical example of mural art. Over time, this art form has evolved and incorporated many 3-dimensional or sculptural elements to give birth to what is known as 3D mural art. The 3D form of mural art involves creating sculpture-like artforms and putting them together on a flat surface (base) like a wall or a flat canvas and then painting/finishing the artwork.
The 3D mural art brings together sculpture and painting harmoniously without bowing down to the limitation of either sculpture (like armature creation, clay drying, etc.) or other forms of paintings.
Workshop details:
The workshop requires no previous knowledge of mural art or even skills in traditional art. The content and structure in such a way that any art lover should be able to enjoy the workshop and have a take-home art piece ready by the end of the workshop.
The 3-hour long workshop would involve 6 stages. Detailed instructions and live demonstrations will be provided for each of these stages. The stages are:
o Understanding and appreciating mural art a quick overview (~ 10 mins),
o Choosing the subject of choice for the artwork (~10 mins),
o Understanding how to use the air-dry clay and other required materials (~10 mins),
o Sculpting the clay (~ 60 mins): As part of this, you would be creating small shapes in clay which would be carefully joined together to form recognizable forms like a flower or a
human eye. These forms would then be arranged together on the mount canvas to form a complete object like a flower vase or a human mask.
o Coloring the artwork using acrylic paints (~ 60 mins), and
o Editing and final touches (~ 15 mins)
o Now the work is ready to take home and display in your living room!
What to look forward to?
There is a lot of very exciting and engaging process you will go through during the workshop. We are sure you will find yourself completely immersed during the workshop and come out refreshed. You would be kneading the clay using fingers, which in-itself is a very relaxing and stress-busting activity. Post kneading, the real art sculpting begins. Sculpting lets you use your imagination to drive your fingers to create your desired shapes in clay, and, at the same time, refine your imagination from the sensory feedback your fingers give you. Post sculpting, you would be gently applying small brush strokes to color the clay form and this process is very similar to miniature painting and has a distinct charm of its own.
The level of hand-eye coordination and motor skills engaged during sculpting and coloring the clay is rarely achieved in other activities. It just takes your mind off everything else and helps you achieve a steady state of flow which is considered therapeutic and enriching. Apart from the benefits of the process, the outcome of the 3D mural art is also very satisfying.
You’d have created something new from scratch. And moreover, your new creation could be touched, felt and smelled too (if you love the clay smell) beyond just seeing it as you do for
most artworks.

Want to learn something that’s part art, part math? Walk into the Urban Ladder store on the 14th of April for an engrossing workshop on string art!
String art, or pin and thread art, is an arrangement of coloured threads strung between points to form patterns. So what’s the math angle? Simply that it has its origins in the ‘curve stitch’ activities invented by Mary Boole at the end of the 19th century – to make the idea of calculus more accessible to children. And then in the 1970s, string art went mainstream, when artists began using it to create increasingly complex figures.
In this workshop, facilitators from Bloom and Grow will guide you to make interesting compositions on a 5″ x 7″ wooden piece using string art. We will also take you through its applications on various materials, so you can go home and experiment with the technique. At the end of the workshop, you’ll take home with you a piece of quirky string artwork.
So come over, and string along a friend if you will!
